
Getting Your PCB Exposure Right with Gallium Iodide Lamps
If you’re running a PCB line, you know the drill. You need your photoresist layers to hit exactly right, or the whole batch is scrap. That’s where Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps come in. They pump out high-intensity UV light—specifically in that 250nm to 350nm sweet spot—which is exactly what modern photoresists crave.
The Tech Side of Things
Think of these as medium-pressure mercury-gallium arcs. Instead of a broad, messy smear of UV light, you get a concentrated punch. Because the light is so focused, it cuts through the resist layer way faster.That means less time per board. But here’s the catch: you can’t just crank the wattage to “turbo mode” to speed up your line. If you do, you’ll cook the substrate. Once it overheats, the resist starts to peel or shift, and suddenly your precision is gone.
Setting Them Up
The lamps are housed in quartz envelopes to let the UV through while keeping the high-pressure vapor locked inside. We use specific electrodes too, because nothing is more annoying than a lamp burning out just because you had to cycle the power a few times. When you’re wiring these into your system, pay close attention to the ballast. It has to match the lamp’s impedance perfectly. If it’s off, you’ll get flickering or—even worse—uneven light. You’ll end up with “dark spots” where the resist just doesn’t cure, and you’ll be staring at a board full of errors.
Real-World Headaches
GaI lamps are great for those razor-thin circuitry lines, but they runhot. Like, really hot. Don’t skim on your cooling system. If your airflow is weak, your lamp life will tank and the light quality will shift. You’ll start seeing your resolution slip, and your boards will look fuzzy. My best advice? Don’t wait for the lamp to actually die. By the time it burns out, it’s been dimming for a while, which means you’ve probably been under-exposing your circuits for days. Stick to a strict replacement schedule based on hours. It’s a lot cheaper to buy a new lamp than to toss a thousand ruined boards.
