
Getting Your IR Heat Right for Food Packaging
Most people treat infrared heating like a light switch: you pick a length, pick a wattage, and hope for the best. But if you’re packaging food, that approach usually fails. Here’s why. Food isn’t uniform. Some parts are wetter than others, and that moisture changes how the packaging absorbs heat. If you just blast the whole thing with the same amount of energy, you’re going to end up with a mess—either cold spots where the seal didn’t take, or burnt film where it got too hot.
A Smarter Way to Handle Heat
We handle this by changing how the power is spread across the lamp. Instead of one flat level of heat, we build a dynamic thermal profile right into the filament. Think of it as targeting. We put more heat exactly where the moisture is heaviest to push out the steam, then dial it back in the drier areas so the plastic doesn’t warp. You won’t find this in a catalog. The Practical Side of Things
To make this work, the lamp’s spectral output has to play nice with your packaging material. For high-moisture loads, we usually go with shortwave IR because it digs deeper into the product. But there’s a catch. When you cram a lot of power into a small zone, it puts a lot of stress on the quartz envelope. If you’re pushing these lamps to the limit to hit crazy fast cycle times, keep a close eye on your reflector alignment. Even a tiny shift can create a hot spot that fries the filament way sooner than it should.
