
Getting Your UV Spectrum Exactly Right: Custom Gallium Iodide Lamps
Standard mercury vapor lamps are fine for some things, but they aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Sometimes you need the light to hit a very specific spot in the UV-C or UV-B range to actually get a chemical bond to snap into place or a photo-initiator to wake up. That’s where Gallium Iodide (GaI) comes in. We build these lamps for the projects where “close enough” just doesn’t cut it. The balancing act: Power vs. Heat Here is the thing about GaI lamps: their performance comes down to how much gallium we put in and how much current you push through them. If you crank up the wattage, you get more UV output. Great, right? But there’s a catch. More power means more heat, and that puts a lot of stress on the quartz envelope. You have to find that sweet spot where you get the power you need without melting your substrate. And a word of advice: if you’re running these at full tilt, make sure your cooling system can actually keep up. If the heat doesn’t move, the lamp dies. Simple as that. Built to last (and fit) We use high-purity synthetic quartz because it lets the most light through. But Gallium Iodide can be pretty aggressive when things get hot. To stop the gas from leaking or the ends from burning out, we seal the electrodes with heavy-duty refractory materials. Plus, we know you probably already have a machine designed. We can tweak the lengths, diameters, and end-cap shapes so these lamps just slide right into your current setup. No need to redesign your whole chassis. Scaling up without the headaches Moving from a prototype to a full product line is usually where things get messy. The biggest nightmare? Inconsistency.
