We spent some time at the 2026 Printing Exhibition showing off our custom UV lamp modules. At the heart of these units is the 80W/cm mercury vapor lamp. Now, this isn’t your average light bulb. It’s a powerhouse designed to do one thing: snap those industrial inks into place instantly so you can keep your lines moving. Dealing with the Heat When you’re pushing 80W per centimeter, you’re getting a massive amount of energy. That’s exactly what you need to cure thick ink layers without slowing down your web speed. But here’s the catch: it getshot. Really hot. The quartz envelope takes a beating. If you try to run these without a solid forced-air or water-cooled jacket, you’re asking for trouble. If your cooling isn’t up to the task, the quartz stresses out and the lamp burns out way sooner than it should. It’s a simple rule—keep it cool or keep buying new lamps. The Magic of the Spectrum We use high-purity fused quartz because we want every bit of that UV light to get through. The mercury discharge pumps out a heavy dose of UVC and UVB, which is the “secret sauce” that tells the photoinitiators in your ink to harden. The best part? We built these as modular units. You don’t have to tear your entire press apart just to change a bulb. They’re basically drop-in replacements. Swap them out and get back to work. The Nitty-Gritty of Setup Wiring these can be a bit tricky. You need a stable ballast and a very specific ignition sequence. We’ve seen too many shops run into trouble because they didn’t account for that initial spike in current when the lamp kicks on. And keep an eye on your hours. Mercury lamps don’t last forever; they fade. Once the output dips, your ink stays tacky. That leads to smudging or “blocking” where the prints stick together. It’s a nightmare to clean up.
